The Effects and Benefits of English Education at My school as I Perceive Them

I caught a glimpse of the effectiveness of M's classes from an incident on a business trip that took place just before the reunion.
Based on this inspiration, I will summarize the effectiveness and utility of English education.

 

In M's English class, the main topic is "presentation”.
We build our presentations around the following issues.
What is it that I want to say?
What do people listening to the presentations want to hear, talk about, and know?

I learned the basics that are important in communication.
 This is very much alive in my daily work and private life on a level that I don't even realize.

 

Examples ( in work situation)
Dealing with customers
(complaints, consultations, instruction manuals, etc.)
Reporting to supervisor
When I went with my supervisor to a customer, I was able to assist my supervisor based on a purpose-driven approach. My supervisor was so experienced but therefore sometimes he  focuses too much on technical problem.
(What is the customer's problem in the first place? What is the customer and our common goal?)

This attitude is fundamental when creating a presentation that I was thaught from M.

 


In the first place, English education is learning about communication itself, but in the second place, it is learning how to communicate with others.
For Japanese people, English is a first tool for self-expression and communication apart from Japanese. From this aspect, it is difficult for Japanese people to express their opinions in English (of course).

However, that is why it is important to learn how to structure sentences in a way that is easy to convey to others, or how to use English in a way that is easy for others to understand, and that is where learning begins.

Especially in the field of English education at my school, "presentation" was one of the major teaching materials.
It is based on Ted Talk ,Pecha Kucha or Presentation Zen etc.
In the end, it is the same when I give a presentation in Japanese.

In other words, even the subject "English" shares its essence with Japanese as long as it is a language.
I feel that M's class was very versatile and essential.

Also, especially in my school, students learn technical English (Industrial English).
Technical writing is based on composing concise sentences in a thorough and objective-driven manner.
This is where I first encountered the concept of an objective orientation,
As above example, I felt that this affected my performance, especially in technical work.

I actually started this article as a way of thanking you, but when I reread the text, it seems somewhat arrogant. I apologize if I offended you.

I’’ll be honest, I used Deepl translation for 80% of this article. I am afraid of this tool. But that is exactly what I am thinking that if I memorized the phrases and got them down to a level where I could use them in real conversations, as I did when I was practicing my English presentations, I would be able to use this tool without being used by it.

I am also interested to hear M's opinion on the Deepl translation.
